Converge 45 : YOU IN MIND

Aug 10, 2017 – Oct 14, 2017

Converge 45 is a curatorial-driven arts platform that engages audiences and artists in Portland, Oregon, connecting the city in a global dialog through the vision of leading curators. This multi-year cycle and four days of extended programming (August 9 – 12) has been lead by Guest Artistic Director Kristy Edmunds, Executive and Artistic Director of the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA. Twenty-six artists working in the United States have been invited to present new and existing works throughout eight venues and the public realm, each responding to Edmunds’ framework of “YOU IN MIND.”

This section of Kristy Edmund’s YOU IN MIND for Converge 45 bring together works of eight artists whose interests and practice intersect with empathy, temporality, and how we have arrived at our current social-scape.

The latest global mantra that café patrons and pundits are uttering across nations is that the one clear feeling of today is that we are living in a time of uncertainty. This flux is experienced and read about in power struggles taking place across continents, nations, and neighborhoods. The contradiction of clarity coupled with uncertainty is not lost on these eight artists, who over their lives of creating projects have taken on the seemingly endless cycle of collapse and recovery.

The Center for Contemporary Art & Culture at PNCA will feature work by participating artists Tannaz Farsi, Stephen Hayes, Chris Johanson, Catherine Opie, Claire Pentecost, and Sharita Towne.

Building upon Converge 45’s Artists’ Congress, which in 2016 brought together 21 artists from across the US to participate in three days of candid conversation, Edmunds presents new and existing works by these artists in exhibitions throughout Portland.
